Admiral was a senior flag officer in most navies. Admirals generally commanded large groups of vessels, or had high-responsibility staff positions.
In was used in two ways:
- a specific rank, higher than Rear Admiral but lower than Admiral of the Fleet;
- a form of address for any rank that included Admiral as part of it (e.g. Rear Admiral).
