Michael Stickel was a Republic of Cinnabar citizen and an officer in Republic of Cinnabar Navy.

In 5149 CE he was in command of the aged battleship Lao-tze during the Siege of Diamondia, and then the Battle of the Jewel System. Stickel had a formidable reputation and manner. Daniel Leary was very impressed that the aged battleship managed to launch all 36 of its missiles at the first exchange of the battle; which testified to remarkable standard of maintenance and a crack crew, of which Stickel was justifiably proud.

At the time, Stickel had short iron-gray hair and craggy face; he looked more like an aging bruiser than a respected and senior captain in the RCN. He was a former classmate of James of Kithran.

Despite his gruff manner, he respected Leary, and invited him to his club.6:Ep

Stickel was a member of Sunset, a club for Western landowners. However, he preferred to spend time at his estate, Three Piers, a hundred miles down the coast from Bantry.7:4
